Shipwrecks of Vermont

vermont.gif (56280 bytes)The state of Vermont contains some 9,600 square miles of territory. It is a landlocked state with an interesting collection of shipwrecks. To view a map of Vermont, click on the thumbnail image at right.

Although Vermont has no ocean coastline, much of it's western boundary borders on Lake Champlain. This large lake (431

square miles, and 121 miles long) has been the scene of extensive boating activity for centuries. In addition to some modern wrecks, Lake Champlain contains several wrecks of historical importance.

In order to protect the historical value of some of the Lake Champlain shipwrecks, Vermont has established the Vermont Underwater Historic Preserve. Annual registration and special regulations apply to all divers wishing to visit wrecks in the Preserve areas. For details on the Preserve, its wrecks and its regulations, click here.

Below is a partial list of the wrecks located in Vermont waters. Clicking on a vessel name link will take you to a wreck data page, where you'll find the wreck's history, specifications and pictures. Use the Back arrow to return here.
