Date of Loss March 17, 1917
Reason for Loss While leaving Vinalhaven Harbor (Carvers Harbor) in a gale, with a heavily-laden barge in tow, the tow cable snagged in the tug's propeller and the vessel was driven by heavy seas onto the point of Green Island. The Cumberland was exposed to the full fury of the gale and quickly went to pieces on the rocks. The barge was badly damaged but apparently survived the incident.
